You Don't Know Me
Tammy Ho Lai-Ming
you don’t know listening to the first few seconds of a 1990s Cantonese pop-song on the plane would make me cry.
you don’t know the way I shuffle a deck of Ukrainian cards.
you don’t know how I build fast carousels by spinning a pen while reading obstinate men.
you don’t know an electric dragon got into my first kiss in 1907.
you don’t know I had a crush on someone who taught me _[this word]_ and _[this word]_.
you don’t know: clouds are waves, clouds are hearts, clouds are everywhere, accusatory, nowhere, clouds yell, clouds love, clouds don’t know a thing, clouds cloud you. How can clouds be pandas? Talk to clouds. All wet, wet, wet. Atlas clouds, phone clouds, tag clouds.
you don’t know: I hummed you a mannequin lullaby in Winter. We had fur coats on. They sold so well. Summer came and we were split. I heard you are now on the third floor. Me? I’m at the attic. Come find me.
you don’t know I wish I could be loved, truly, by more than one and can love no one in return.
