Ouija Board Transcripts
Claudia Lamar

Imagine the board cut from driftwood. The Querent’s fingers like octopus tentacles around the stem of a wine glass. Pushing and pulling and peering through the glass at the carved alphabet. The Querent is pretending to be a priest lamenting the letters in shallow graves.

Querent: Tell me your name.

Ouija: I am a greek god.

Querent: Forget truths and bring me myths.

A shipworm guts through the letter O.

Querent: and what about this magic?

Ouija: Here is a transformation spell. When it is dark, walk naked into a forest and on all fours howl like a wolf. You will either become a wolf or get eaten by one.

Querent: (laughs wildly)

The spirit spells out a poem. It is about old things and the color of orange peelings. The Querent becomes suspect. The spirit tells a love story, and the Querent is a believer. One last question.

Querent: (inaudible)

Ouija: In the core of your nerve.
